Charell Schillo has loved
horses as long as she can remember. Charell’s earliest childhood
memories are fondly recalled by her and her sister Karen spending many
hours of the day riding their horses across the Northern Prairies on
their parents' farm and ranch in western North Dakota. She and her
husband Daryl live on a small (by western ND standards) ranch in
northwestern North Dakota.
Charell began her rodeo
career at age 10; she competed on horses that she had trained herself
and that fact remains the same to this day. At age 16 Charell felt the
“need for speed” and was seriously competing and winning. She used her
income from training horses and rodeo to pay for her education,
graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and then a
Master of Social Work. This educational background has been helpful in
teaching horsemanship and barrel racing to young people starting out in
the sport of barrel racing. Charell facilitates barrel racing clinics
every year, bringing in top names, as well as teaching herself.
Charell is a founding
member of the Williston High School Rodeo Club and continues, with her
husband Daryl, to actively volunteer time to the club. Her daughters
Kari and Sara both enjoyed successful High School Rodeo careers on home
trained barrel horses.
Barrel horses trained by
Charell include the 1997 Montana High School Rodeo Barrel Racing State
Champion ridden by Leandra Viara, Lambert, Mt; the 1997-96 North Dakota
State Finals Champion barrel horse, qualifying for the short go at the
NHSRA ridden by LeeAnn Hovde, as well as money winning horses in
amateur and WPRA rodeos.
Charell’s philosophy for
a winning barrel horse are the 3 S’s:
Soundness
Sensibility
Speed
Charell is now concentrating on raising barrel prospects and
will be competing in futurities with these homebred prospects.
